A Record 38 Awards Presented at 2008 Good News Awards

The Good News Awards received a record 51 entries this year and also distributed more awards than ever before. The leaders or representatives of the five Upper Peninsula Christian denominations that sponsor the awards presented a total of 30 Good News Awards and eight Certificates of Merit to 16 newspapers and radio and TV stations at a luncheon on June 10 in Marquette. They also honored the 48 media professionals who wrote the articles or produced the programs that were recognized.

The Good News Awards were instituted in 1998 to honor the media for works of excellence that affirm the dignity of people, uphold universally-recognized human values and uplift the human spirit. They are sponsored by the judicatory heads of the Evangelical Lutheran, United Methodist, Episcopal, Catholic and Presbyterian Churches in the Upper Peninsula. The presenters from those churches, respectively, were Bishop Thomas Skrenes, the Rev. Grant Lobb, the Rev. Rise Thew Forrester, Bishop James Garland, and the Rev. Carolyn Raffensperger.
