The fourth Tuesday of every month at 6 pm ET / 5 pm CT, January 24-April 25 (4 sessions)
Instructor: Pastor Elisabeth Daniels of First, Gladstone
Registration deadline: January 10 (to allow time to purchase book)

This course will journey through the four parts of Karen Speerstra and Herbert Anderson’s book The Divine Art of Dying: How to Live Well While Dying. The Speerstra/Anderson book is required for this course. A recommended book is Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande. Both are available on Amazon. The schedule will go as follows:

Month 1. Taking the Turn Toward Death--Cultural and Theological Norms around Death;
Month 2. Orienting Toward Death--Grief and Ring Theory;
Month 3. Living Until We Die--Caregiver Support and Mourning Rituals; and
Month 4. Dying into Life--The presentations.

Each class begins with a spiritual practice. There will be time for discussion as well as some written reflection work. Students will give a brief presentation during the 4th week. If there are other resources, they will be shared over email in the weeks before they are needed for class. We will meet in-person at First Lutheran Church in Gladstone. There can be a zoom element if requested. The class will be around 90 minutes.

Materials: The Divine Art of Dying: How to Live Well While Dying is required. Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End is recommended. See above. Both are available on Amazon.
